During this period of discovery there were many Monarchs (kings and queens) who were interested in gaining additional lands and colonizing those lands to create additional imports (products coming into their home country) and exports (products going out and making them money). Trade was universal. No country could survive without purchasing from other countries and selling to them as well.

Christopher Columbus may not have been the first to step onto the American Continent but following his discovery, many other countries became involved in populating America. Spain, France and England were the foremost. Although countries like the Netherlands also immigrated to America to colonize, they never controlled a substantial part of the land.

In order to gain dominance over other nations, from 1754 until 1763 France and Great Britain fought each other for the land in America, and it was called the French and Indian War. George Washington fought for the British in this war and as a Major became extremely well-known and popular for his heroics during this war. The French and Indian war was part of a greater war known as the Seven Years' War.

Although the war was between France and Great Britain the battle took place in North America--they were fighting for the land there. France had help from the Native Americans but ultimately Britain won the war. This victory gave Britain control over most of the colonies in North America.

Why does this war matter?

  1. This gave George Washington prominence and fame. He became well known and well liked. This gave him the experience he needed to be the Commander of the Continental Army a few years later.

  2. This gave Great Britain the majority rule over the Americas and rule over the colonies.
