"Early to bed and early to rise make a man healthy, wealthy and wise." --Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin is known as one of the Founding Fathers. He was a great scientist and inventor. Born in 1706 he was quite a bit older than the other founding fathers and certainly had more experience. He was also well traveled and quite well off. He ran a printing press for a large part of his life was the first newspaper in several colonies. He would help establish the first fire station, police station, hospital and become the first postmaster general.

He appears on the $100 dollar bill.

There is so much to say about Benjamin Franklin! There are so many resources, books and videos that I will leave that to your own instruction.

Like the other founding fathers he also had a strong faith in God.

“Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God” (proposed by Franklin for the motto of the Great Seal of the United States).

Benjamin Franklin was very social and spent quite a bit of time abroad. He was influential with France--without them, America could not have won the war!

Important to note: Benjamin was one of only a few who were ordained to the office of High Priest by President Wilford Woodruff in the St. George Temple in 1877.

Benjamin Franklin was famous during his day and today as well for his intelligence, his writings and his significant influence in the American Revolution. He was the only person to sign the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Alliance with France, the Treaty of Paris and the U.S. Constitution.

ACTIVITIES AND IDEAS

  • Make Silhouettes: This is something they did in the early 1800s so we're a bit early but it is a fun activity that kids will like! Click here:

  • Benjamin was the first postmaster. Kids love mail! So have them write letters to each other (or to friends) then take turns delivering them. We can even mail them to cousins!
